Musical Recognition towards University Entry

Did you know some musical achievements may be recognised for bonus ATAR ponts for undergraduate entry into some tertiary institutions.  Please contact tertiary institutions directly for currently information about any bonus point schemes that may assist elite performers.

Some things that can contribute for bonus points are:

• Receiving an 8th grade practical certificate
• Obtaining an AMEB music or speech diploma, such as the AMusA or APCA
• Being accepted into the AYO
• Being accepted into a national choir?

Handprints & Goals for 2012

In recognition of your child’s part in our music making community, they have been given a handprint to decorate and return to class in Term 2.  In addition, I would like each child to write some goals on each finger.  This will help to set a pathway for our study and encourage the children to work towards reaching these goals in 2012.   Goals can include things like – learning a favourite song, learning a song by memory, completing their theory workbook or practical workbook, completing a theory or practical examination or even playing a piece for family and friends or at school assembly.  Please assist your child in setting achievable goals.  I would like to see at least 2 goals set with the others being added in each of the following terms.

Welcome back for Term 1

Welcome back to all The Piano Academy students. I hope you have enjoyed your holidays and are ready for the excitement and challenges that playing the piano presents.  

2011 Final Day of Classes

Schools will break up for the holidays on Friday 16 December 2011.    Monday 19 December will mark the last day of teaching for the 2011 year.  All lessons will continue as normal until 19 December 2011.   

For Miss Tania's students, formal lessons will resume again on each Tuesday in January, commencing Tuesday 3^rd January 2012.  For Miss Jessica's students and those resuming with the school term all lessons will commence the week of Monday 30 January 2012.

We take this opportunity to congratulate all our students on their hard work this year and hope that you have all enjoyed your musical journey this year.  We look forward to continuing to enrich your knowledge and love of music and playing the piano.  We wish all students and their families a safe and happy Christmas and every good wish for the coming year.

Online Written Examinations Available Up To Grade 3

The AMEB now offers ONLINE written examinations up to Grade 3 Theory of Music.  This is a great iniative by the AMEB as it removes the need to take time out of school to attend a written examination and also allows students to choose the day and time to sit their examiantion.  You can sit your examination any time of the year instead of just in May and August of each year.  Enrolment fees are the same as the standard written examinations and will be collected and processed by your teacher.  Once you are registered for your examination you will be issued with a username and password to access your online account.  As a student you will have up to 1 year to actually sit and complete your exam. Once you are ready sit for your exam you simply log into your online exam account, select and your exam and sit the exam there and then. All examinations will be conducted at The Piano Academy studio at a mutually agreeable day and time .  You will be notified of your result immediately. Once your exam has taken place, the AMEB NSW office is notified via email that an examination has been completed at which point a certificate is issued.  The advancement of technology makes this a very welcome addition to written examinations in our studio.  You will be advised by your teacher of your suitability to sit for an online examination. 

PhD Research Project by Laura Bishop @ UWS

What a great morning spent with Laura Bishop assisting her in her PhD research project on 'musical expertise and the planning of expression during piano performance'.  Musicians often say that in order to play expressively, performers must focus on hearing the sound in their heads(audiation) that they want to produce.  The aim of Laura's study is to determine whether dynamics and articulation are a part of this imagined guiding sound.  In the context of the study performed today, Laura is determining whether experienced musicians are more successful in maintaining their own interpretation of a piece when expressive markings appear on the score that contradict what they intend to play.  They are also expected to be faster and more accurate at discriminating between markings that mach their intentions and markings that contradict them.  As part of the study I was asked to give performances under silent and imagined as well as normal sounded conditions.  The purpose was to see whether my imagery would be more vivid when no auditory or motor feedback was available.  Laura hypothesises that the imagery is more vivid during silent performances - when you can feel your hands moving but can't hear the music being created.  It was quite a difficult task to complete - to play expressively but perform silently (ie hear no sound as I played the piano).  For me there is an obvious connection with expression and emotion and sound.  It was an extremely interesting morning and I am grateful to Laura for the opportunity to participate in her research project.

Practical Examination Results

Parramatta City Eisteddfod

Congratulations to Sandy Priyana our Certificate of Performance student who performed 'Fig Leaf Rag' by Scott Joplin at the Parramatta City Eisteddfod  on Sunday 5th June 2011.  Sandy was awarded 83/100 for her performance in this Eisteddfod.  Well done Sandy!!  Sandy will sit her Certificate of Performance examination later this year. 

"Pierre de Coubertin Award"

Congratulations to ex-piano student Mariana Vazquez for receiving the "Pierre de Coubertin Award".  This award is given to a student who has excelled in sport thoughout their high school life but most of all - has demonstrated good sportmanship and fair play. It is an award named after the founder of the modern olympics
(it is also given at the olympics).  It is given to one student per high school thoroughout the state.  Congratulations to Mariana who was that ONE student! 

Written Examination Enrolments

Enrolments for August Written Examinations close on Saturday 4 June 2011.  All students suitable for an examination have been advised by their teacher.  Your enrolment fee covers your AMEB examination together with a number of past examination papers for examination practice.  All written examination students will be required to attend a trial examination paper on Satur paper will be the most recent original past examination paper available.  For this, attendance will be required outside lesson time to complete this examination at a cost of $25.00 (which includes the test paper and marking).

First Metropolitan Examinations

The First Metropolitan AMEB examinations have been scheduled for Friday 10th June 2011. Unfortunately, this year the AMEB has not provided an examiner to our studio due to limited availability coupled with to few examination candidates in this area, in this session. Accordingly, examinations will be held at:

The Piano Academy apologises for this change of venue. The bonus in this instance is that our examinations have been scheduled on the last possible day for examinations this session so we have the maximum amount of time to prepare, I will be at the centre to assist students on the day. General Knowledge Workshop

The general knoweldge workshop, for students enrolled in first metropolitan examinations, will be held on Friday 29th April 2011 @ 6.30pm - 8.00pm.  All enrolled students are required to attend.  Please bring a photocopy of each of your list pieces together with red pens and coloured pencils and/or highlighters.  Your examination date will be issued at this workshop.  The cost of this workshop is $29.00

Written Trial Examination Papers

Trial written examination papers are being held on Saturday 9th April 2011 @ 10.00am.
Cost is $25.00.  Students undertaking trial examination papers this Saturday will sit their official examination on Wednesday 18th May 2011.  Good luck to all examination students.

2011: Term 1, Week 2

Welcome back to week 2 already!   We've all settled into the routine of term 1 now.  Holidays already seem like a distant memory.  Practical and Theory examination enrolments are currently being processed for examinations in May.  Eligible students have already been advised.  Practical students, be sure to check with your year co-ordinators this week for any dates which are unavailable between Wednesday 27th April 2011 (Week 1 Term 2) to Saturday 4th June 2011 (Week 6 Term 2). 

Practical Examination Students:  There are 80 days (11 weeks and 3 days) till the start of the practical examination session.

Written Examination Students:  There are 101 days (13 weeks and 3 days) till your theory examination

End of Term 2010

Last day of official classes is Friday 17 December 2010.  Monday 20th December is available for lessons for students who need to make-up a missed class or who simply want to continue classes for one more week.  Some of you are returning throughout the January holidays and those who are will be allotted a time for lesson attendance.  For those attending with the commencement of the 2011 school term, our first day of lessons is Monday 31st December 2010. 

Please remember that one lesson fee deposit is required to secure your position in 2011.  Please ensure this is paid at your last lesson.  This will become your first lesson payment upon your return to class in 2011.

Practical Examinations

It seems that our Practical Examinations are scheduled to run on Wednesday 1 December 2010.  Specific times at this stage, are not available as I am still in talks with the AMEB about a slight amendement to our examination.  But....in the meantime......student's should work towards an examination goal of Wednesday 1 December.  More information will be given as it becomes available.

Welcome Back for Term 4

Welcome back to lessons @ The Piano Academy for Term 4.  This term is a busy term with many students preparing for their practical examinations in November/December.  We have a number of candidates doing their HSC this year and also a number (of the same students) completing examinations in Grade 7 and Grade 8 piano.  Good luck to all of our examination students - both musical and academic.

Term 4 lessons will conclude on Saturday 18th December.  Lessons for those wishing to attend over the holidays will recommence on one day commencing Monday 3rd January with normal lesssons resuming for 2011 on Monday 31st January 2010.

Mariana Vazquez & Fairvale High School @ Jesterfest 2010

Congratulations to Mariana Vazquez and her band from Fairvale High School who participated in annual high school band competition - Jesterfest 2010. Jesterfest was started by the Erik Harsoul Sarcoma Foundation which is in commemoration of Erik Harsoul a young teenage boy who passed away in November 2008 from Ostea Sarcoma. Erik's parents started the foundation as a way of bringing teenagers and their parents together to raise awareness about sarcomas. JesterFest is Australia's first cancer awareness campaign aimed specifically at reducing the number of sarcoma related teenage deaths that occurs annually in our country

Sydney Conservatorium of Music 'Rising Stars'

This Saturday 4th September I went along to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's 'Rising Stars Concert'. The 'Rising Stars' program is a performance based program for gifted young musicians aged 5 to 18 years. As part of their studies, students will be encouraged to present the works they have prepared with their teacher in regular concerts. It was a wonderful display of young talent and it was great to simply sit and listen and enjoy the music.

Concerts are held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music on Saturdays at 11am during school terms. They are free of charge and all are welcome to attend. There will be a concert next Saturday 11th September and Saturday 18th September. Concerts will also be held on Saturday 24th and 31st October, 7th, 14th and 21st November 2010.

Jump on a train, hop off at Circular Quay and take a walk to the CON and simply enjoy!!!

The Piano Academy 'Open House' and Photographs

The Piano Academy invites all parents to our 'Open House' this week.   Parents are invited to attend their child's lesson as an opportunity to see what happens in a typical piano lesson and also as an opportunity to touch base with the teacher and receive an update on their child's progress. 

Concurrently, photographs will be taken of each student and any parent's that attend.

We hope to see as many parents as possible. 

Inner West Eisteddfod Piano Syllabus 2010

The Inner West Eisteddfod Syllabus is now available for viewing. Level 2 students are encouraged to participate.  There are a number of students who will receive a recommendation for participation in the eisteddfod.  Those students are the same for the 2010 Junior Music Festival.   In the meantime, have a look at the syllabus to get a feel for what an eisteddfod is all about.

The 2010 Junior Music Festival is a great opportunity for level 2 piano students to refine their performance skills.  As part of their examination preparation it is highly recommended that all Level 2 examination students enter at least 2 eisteddfods and/or music festivals prior to their actual examination.  Level 1 candidates are welcome to participate also.  The 2010 Junior Music Festival is run by the Music Teachers Association of NSW and is open to students of members who are aged under 16 years at 31st July 2010.

General Knowledge Workshop May 2010

The 'General Knowledge Workshop' went well tonight.....8 out of the 10 students sitting for examinations this session were able to make it, which was fantastic! Unfortunately no-one wanted to eat my chips because of the crunching noise.....sorry guys....next time I'll provide some quieter snacks!!!! We all worked through our general knowledge and now our music looks delightfully colourful.....time to transform those colours into info in those crazy brains of yours!!!!!

Welcome to Jessica Cindric - Piano and Vocal Tutor

A big welcome to Jessica Cindric who joins our team as piano and vocal tutor. Jessica Cindric was trained as a classical pianist and has been playing the piano for almost 10 years. She is also an accomplished vocalist and dancer. Jessica has been teaching piano privately to students of all ages ranging from beginner to intermediate levels. She is also one of the resident dance teachers at ‘Action on Cue’ where she teaches classes in jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and funk.

Jessica has completed her piano training with Tania Rashidi @ The Piano Academy and has completed many AMEB examinations with great success. She is currently studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Western Sydney and is completing her final dance teacher diploma examination this year.

Jessica has been performing regularly from a young age and has been involved in a number of amateur and professional productions, including a performance with Casey Donavan; cheerleading with West Tigers Rugby League Club; lead role of Gabriella Montez in High School Musical with the Cabramatta Youth Group and various eisteddfods and concerts.

Jessica’s passion is in teaching, and with varied background in music and the arts, music lessons with Jessica are always fun and interesting. She is always striving to find the most fun, creative and engaging way of teaching children to learn and love music!

Welcome everyone to lessons in 2010! I am sure you have all had a wonderful break and have returned well rested and ready to tackle the challenges that this year will bring. To ensure your progress for this year, here are a few points you should take care to follow:

• daily practice is essential - once you have established the habit, it is as easy as eating or brushing your teeth!

• Remember to check your workbook/diary daily and tick the boxes at the completion of each task!

• Earn your days off - practise effectively each other day to achieve each task that has been assigned of you, and personal satisfaction in doing so. You will be surprised at how much progress you will make.

• Organise your books, music, and ‘bits and pieces’ before you start your practice. This will minimise the time you might waste hunting for things and will maximise the effectiveness of your practice time.

• Start your theory homework right away, while the explanation is fresh but remember if you have any trouble please email me for assistance.

Online Written Examinations Trial

As most of you are aware, I am part of the testing panel providing feedback to the AMEB on the new Online Written Examination initiative. So far I have completed a Preliminary Music Craft Written Examination; Preliminary Music Craft Aural Examination; Grade 1 Music Craft Aural; Grade 2 Theory of Music; Grade 1 Theory of Music. You will all be pleased to know that your teacher has scored a High Distinction in each examination!!!!! Phew!!!!!!!!!!

2009 Annual Newsletter

2009 The Year In Review……


As usual 2009 has proved to be an exciting year. We have had 8 candidates sit for their practical examinations in May and were fortunate enough to have Dr John Terry return again to examine our students. There were 13 candidates who sat for theory examinations in May and August this year. Special congratulations to a number of grade 5 theory students. Technically they have completed all their theory prerequisites!!! Congratulations to the 13 candidates who completed their practical examinations last week. This examination session was presided by Mrs Robyn Lenn OAM. All examinations are finished for 2009. The journey starts now for examinations in 2010!!!


The Piano Academy saw its first Certificate of Performance candidate this year. Sally Vuong completed this examination (which follows 8th grade) successfully last week. Sally is only 15 years of age and she has managed an exceptional level of practical and theoretical examinations for her age. Sally’s entire program was performed by memory. Congratulations to Sally on completion of such a prestigious award.
Congratulations also to John Choueifaty who has successfully completed both 8th Grade Practical Piano and Grade 5 Theory in 2009. This is a remarkable achievement given the time and dedication to practice and study that students must put in to achieve success in music examinations whilst maintaining a balance between school work, family and social activities and other influences.

2010 Written Examination Information


Written examinations in 2010 will be held on Wednesday 19th May and Wednesday 25th August 2010. This date is a nation-wide examination date and candidates all around Australia will sit their examination on these days. Enrolments for the May examinations will be due by Saturday 13th February and Saturday 5th June for August examinations. All enrolments will incur a $5.00 administration fee. The date of the trial examination papers is Saturday 8th May (for May examinations) and Saturday 14th August (for August examinations). It is expected that students will make themselves available for the trial examination papers. The cost for the trial examinations is $10.00.


In addition to written examinations the AMEB has announced that it has a new online learning partner, Web Ed Development. This partnership will create a new program that will enable students to sit their AMEB written examinations online. This is a very exciting development as it will allow all students to sit their AMEB examinations at any time of the year.


Online examinations will be available for first and second grades of all theoretical subjects for the 2010 academic year. Extensive testing is being carried out at the moment and I have made myself available to the AMEB for the purpose of testing this new capability. I will be sitting for a first and second grade examination in the next few weeks. This will enable me to get a real feel for what is involved in an online examination and to answer the many questions that so many of you have!


In regards to the most obvious question of supervision with an online examination, all candidates and parents will be required to sign a statutory declaration (issued by the AMEB) stating that the examination is being performed under suitable supervision. All examinations conducted through The Piano Academy however, will be completed in the studio under direct supervision. Candidates can choose the date and time of their examination, but it will be completed here in the studio.
The AMEB will add on new grades, possibly throughout the 2010 academic year. Most of you may have to sit a traditional venue examination this year but it could be your last! The balance of your exams can, if you choose, be sat for online.
More good news for theory candidates…..THE MEMORY OF FOLK TUNES HAS BEEN DELETED!!!!!!!!!!! As of 2010:

“the candidate will be asked to recognise the whole or any part of one or more than one of the set folk tunes. The song(s) will appear on the treble staff, without the lyrics and will appear in the key in which they appear in your copy. At least four bars of any tune will be shown in questions requiring the recognition of part(s) of a tune.”

2010 Practical Examination Information


Enrolments for the 1st Metropolitan examination session will be due by Saturday 13 February 2010. Students who wish to enter this examination must have all list pieces and scales learnt prior to enrolment. This is to ensure that students have the best chance of success at their examination and ensures that there is ample time to prepare for all sections of the examination regardless of what distractions life may throw. Unfortunately no student will be allowed to enter an examination unless sufficient progress has been made in list pieces and scales.
Students currently planning on a May examination are working towards this goal and are well aware of the limitations placed on them with regards to enrolment. Examinations entered into for the 1st Metropolitan will be held on a Tuesday or Wednesday between 24 April—5 June 2010. The actual examination date will be notified 4 weeks prior.
Enrolment forms and fee quotes will be given to appropriate students at the end of this term. Enrolments in 2010 include a $7.00 administration fee.
Enrolments for the 2nd Metropolitan examination session will be due by Saturday 24 July 2010 for examinations between 23 October—13 November 2010. Students sitting for school certificate and HSC examinations this year may elect to be examined outside of this period but in doing so will be required to sit their examination at either the Conservatorium of Music or the AMEB office, both in Sydney city.
For examinations to be held at The Piano Academy the AMEB requires at least 4 hours of examining. Provided there are sufficient number of candidates, students will always be examined here at Cecil Hills. In the event of not reaching examination quotas, students will be required to attend their examination at either the Conservatorium of Music or the AMEB office, both in Sydney city. Unfortunately the venue cannot be confirmed until after enrolments are processed. It is likely, however, that examinations will be held here at The Piano Academy.
A ‘Guidelines for Parents and Students’ has been prepared which details all the rules and regulations of the AMEB examinations. Should you wish to obtain a copy please supply your email address.


P-Plate Piano


The AMEB has introduced a new syllabus titled ‘P- Plate Piano’. This syllabus comprises a series of three bright, colourful piano books for beginner pianists who have completed at least 6 – 18 months of lessons (depending on their age). The books are designed to complement the teacher’s existing teaching methods and provide perfect preparation for AMEB Preliminary Piano or Preliminary Piano for Leisure. They feature stunning artwork, fun activities and informative text written by nationally respected music educator, Elissa Milne.


There is an optional non-graded assessment available at the completion of each book. Students can perform three pieces selected for assessment alone or in groups and parent and teacher participation is encouraged. There is no requirement for technical work, sight reading, aural tests or general knowledge. At the end of the performance the student will receive a certificate issued by the AMEB acknowledging the student’s achievement. A report written by an AMEB examiner will be sent to the student's teacher soon after the performance. On completion of Book 3 in addition to a certificate, students will receive a credit card style P-Plate Piano licence.
This is a really exciting initiative by the AMEB as it gives students an introduction to the examination world without the pressure of a formal examination. I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop on this syllabus on Sunday 29th November and I am looking forward to introducing these books to the beginner students at The Piano Academy.


Each book is priced at $34.95.


The Piano Academy ‘Open House’


Over the last few years I have found that more and more students are being dropped off and parents are not staying in the class. While I welcome the opportunity to develop a relationship with each child (without Mum or Dad present) it means that sometimes parents are not fully aware of the musical achievements being made. Accordingly, I would like to introduce ‘Open House’ at The Piano Academy. Basically the last week of term 2 and term 4 will be an ‘Open House’ where parents are welcome to attend their child’s lesson to view what has been covered over the last two terms and as an opportunity to touch base with me as the teacher. This will give us all an opportunity to connect and enjoy the wonderful skills that are being acquired and the fabulous talent that is present among us. I would like to commence the first ‘Open House’ the week of Monday 16th December. Please feel free to come along to your child’s lesson and witness the magic of your child’s talent for yourself!!!


Kindermusik @ Busy Bees Music


As most of you are aware I gained qualifications as a Kindermusik Educator. As I have been busy being a mum (amongst other things) I haven’t been able to start my planned Kindermusik classes until…..now. I am please to announce that in 2010 I will lead the first Kindermusik classes. Some of you have been given information on these classes in the past. I have attached a separate brochure detailing the classes but in the meantime I will run two demonstration classes in January – Wednesday 13th January for the Village class and Wednesday 20th January for Our Time. The Village curriculum is for children aged newborn to 1 ½ years old whilst the Our Time curriculum is for children 1 ½ years to 3 years old. For those of you interested in attending a demonstration, or who know somebody who may be interested please contact me on 0419 449 733 to register as class numbers are limited to 6 in a class. I will run a number of demonstrations if interest allows. Actual classes will commence on Tuesday 9th February. These classes will run under the business name ‘Busy Bees Music’.

As of 2010 I will be using the following blogger / website to keep students and parents up to date of the happenings at The Piano Academy. This will include information and links about upcoming eisteddfods, AMEB examination information, recitals, workshops etc. Photographs will be included only with permission from parents (see below). It is expected that students and parents will check the website regularly for musical updates! In 2010 there will be more of a lean towards using online methods of communication rather than the traditional paper form. Please ensure that email address of both student and/or parents are up to date.

As you know, I like to take photographs of the students periodically for use within the studio and also as a momento of each student’s musical journey. It has been interesting to see the change in so many of you over the years. I have included an official ‘Photo Permission’ slip with this newsletter to ensure that there are no objections to the use of photos. Would you kindly return your completed slip at your next lesson.


New laws for self employed people


As of May 2010, the law in NSW, will require all self employed people who work with children under the age of 18 years to undergo a “Working with Children Check”. This now involves gaining a ‘Certificate’ to demonstrate that teachers are not banned from working with children. All self employed teachers must display their certificate in a visible spot. All teachers at The Piano Academy will be gaining their certificate over the Christmas break and be ‘certified’ as of Term 1, 2010.


This applies to all self employed people and/or teachers so many of your coaches, tutors etc will be required by law to obtain this certificate.


Summer Holidays


In keeping with the studio policy of The Piano Academy, all students will be required to pay one lesson’s fee deposit to secure your enrolment with The Piano Academy for 2010. All payments will be receipted as proof of payment and are due in your lessons of the week of Monday 14th December. The deposit acknowledges your commitment to piano lessons and your desire to continue with The Piano Academy in 2010, it is not refundable should you not return the following year. Upon your return however, it will become payment for your first lesson in the following year and secure your regular position.


If you are wishing to terminate your lessons in 2009 then please be sure to indicate this on your holiday notice form. Of course I will be saddened to see any student leave but letting me know in advance will allow me to offer your lesson time to another student who would love piano lessons!!!


Students taking extended absences for overseas trips in 2010 should make prior arrangements with The Piano Academy at least 4 weeks prior to departure. Students preparing for examinations will be required to make up all missed term lessons, either by way of double lessons prior to leaving and / or additional lessons during school holidays. Again, a deposit of one lesson’s fee will be required to secure your position and will become payment for your first lesson upon your return.


Some Amendments To Examination Procedures….


Lesson Times: It is becoming increasingly difficult to cover all the syllabus requirements (for both theory and practical) within a 30 minute lesson. I have spoken to some students already, about the need to increase lesson times and many of you have made the increases, for which I am grateful for. The following lesson times are expected minimum times for students preparing for practical examinations. Students wishing to take lessons in length less than those specified, cannot be guaranteed that they will complete that grade in a year. Unfortunately students who do not maintain a conscientious standard of progress, practise and performance will not be considered for examinations. The standard of achievement within AMEB is quite high and students need to be fully prepared in all sections to meet the objectives of the examination with a reasonable amount of success within the timeframe available.


Recommended lesson times:


Preliminary – Fourth Grade: 30 minutes
Fifth – Sixth Grade: 45 Minutes
Seventh, Eighth and C.o.P: 60 minutes.


Theory Work: In the past theory work has been incorporated into the weekly piano lesson. As of 2010, theory workshops will be a regular occurrence on each Tuesday during the school holidays (two Tuesdays during the January holidays) during the school holidays. It will be anticipated that students will be able to attend at least one workshop on one school holiday session, to assist in the preparation of examination material. Dates and times are indicated in the ‘Calendar’ section of this report. Workshops allow students to come together to share information and knowledge and work solidly on theoretical subjects.


Eisteddfods: As of 2010, all level 2 examination students (Grades 5 – C.o.P) will be required to attend and participate in at least one eisteddfod. This allows students an opportunity to witness other students of similar age performing and to gain value insight into the techniques and performance styles of other pianists. It also sets a mid-exam goal of ensuring that one piece is polished and prepared in time for performance at the eisteddfod. Level 1 examination students (Preliminary – Grade 4) are most welcome to enter or simply attend as an audience member.


General Knowledge: The general knowledge component of the AMEB examinations seems to be gaining more and more weight. In recent years I have seen quite a shift in the amount of detail required for this section of the examination. Unfortunately, general knowledge is one section, that due mainly to time constraints, is generally underprepared. In 2010 all Level 2 candidates (Grades 5 – C.o.P) will be required to attend a general knowledge workshop the week after enrolments have been accepted. Far too many students are leaving their study of general knowledge to the last minute and this is impacting on the quality of grades. Dates are set in the ‘Calendar’.


Examination Recital: Some of you were involved in the inaugural examination recital run in October this year. The Piano Academy was fortunate enough to have Dr Margaret Brandman, a leader in music education, attend our studio to preside over an informal examination recital. Students were able to perform a number of pieces for Dr Brandman who gave a master class style discussion of each student’s performances. Students were given constructive feedback and were also given the opportunity to listen both to the performance and feedback of other students. Whilst it was a difficult task for all students, it was a resounding success and will now form part of the usual examination preparation. Dr Margaret Brandman will preside over two examination recitals in 2010 in preparation for both the first and second metropolitan examinations.


Theory Prep Workshops in January


As mentioned previously, there will be two ‘Theory Prep Workshops’ run these January school holidays. These intensive workshops will cover all the syllabus requirements for each grade and allow students individual attention to complete their theory work whilst in the presence of a teacher. Students are required to bring pencils, rubber, sharpener and of course their theory textbook to the workshop. There will be two workshops held this January school holidays:-


o Tuesday 12th January, 9.30am – 11.30am, $45.00
o Tuesday 19th January, 9.30am – 11.30am, $45.00


Students can attend both workshops or one, but it is recommended that students can attend at least one workshop during this time. The following students would benefit from workshop attendance in January.

Theory Grade Changes


Some great news in the theory department is in respect to grades…..the high distinction grades for all theory examinations have been changed. In order to gain a high distinction in any grade, your mark must be 95% and over. In the past, it was different for each grade however the AMEB has now made a standard 95% and above mark required to gain a high distinction. All other marks remain the same. In summary:


o Pass 65% - 74%
o Credit 75% - 84%
o Honours 85% - 94%
o High Distinction 95% - 100%


Margaret Brandman Inaugural Recital


Congratulations to the following students who participated in the inaugural examination recital presided by Dr Margaret Brandman. We were so fortunate to have Dr Brandman attend our studio. She is a well known Australian pianist, composer, teacher and educator. Many of her works are included in the AMEB syllabus for examination and she has authored a complete range of music education materials. Dr Brandman is also the major contributing writer of the written component of the new AMEB’s Music Craft workbooks. In 2008 she released her groundbreaking new harmony book, Harmony Comes Together.


We will be fortunate enough for Dr Brandman to return again to our studios in 2010 for what is to become a regular event on The Piano Academy’s calendar.
